Velma Ruth Crawford was born to the late Thomas Jenkins and Della Alexander Jenkins on May 30, 1925 in Chesnee, South Carolina. She departed this earthly life on December 7, 2023 at the golden age of 98.
Velma was married to the late Andrew Crawford for 49 years. They nurtured and cared for grand-children, nieces, nephews and other children that came into their lives. Velma was affectionately known as Ma Velma.
Velma was a woman of faith and loved her God. She professed her faith at Brooklyn CME from a young age. She was a dedicated member and served her church. Velma was the oldest living member and was the Mother of the Church.
Velma was admired for her vibrant personality. She had a laugh that would light up a room. She was easy-going, always had a positive outlook on life and would not hesitate to speak her mind when needed. Velma made sure the people she loved knew they were loved and cared for by her. She was a beautiful person inside and out, spreading joy and happiness. She was 98 years old with a youthful spirit and sharp mind, even using a cell phone at her age. When asked what would you want people to remember about you, she simply said, “I lived the best life I could and I’m happy”.
Velma was a fashionista. She loved dressing up, wearing her beautiful head wraps and jewelry. Her favorite color was red; to complete her outfit she would put on her red lipstick, blush and red fingernail polish. She had a love for food. Her favorites were fried chicken, chilli dogs and sweets. Golden Corral was her favorite restaurant.
Velma is preceded in death by her parents Thomas Jenkins and Della, husband Andrew Crawford, brothers James Jenkins, Denormon Jenkins, Robert Jenkins and Walter Lee Jenkins, and nieces Macie Kelly & Vivian Jenkins.
Velma leaves to cherish her loving memories: daughter-in-law Sylvia Wilkins, grandsons John Wilkins, Cornelius Wilkins Jr and Decarlo Wilkins, nieces Bertina Alston, Glennell Jenkins, Theresa Jenkins Bonds, Valerie Armstrong, Irish Shema Jenkins-Davie and Crystal Jenkins Singleton, nephews Lorry Jenkins, Thomas McKinney, Victor Jenkins and Steven Kelly, and a host of great-grands and great-great-grands.
Velma, you will be missed, but never forgotten. Thank you for the wonderful memories.
