Ramses Newman Obituary

 We celebrate the life of Ramses Newman, affectionately known as “Gator”. He
was given that nickname while serving in the Air Force, however his family calls him
“Ra”.
Ramses was born in Boynton Beach Florida on October 25,1957. His parents were the
late Richard Cleveland Newman and Marion Alene Smith. He was the 6th child of 7
children.
He received his early childhood Christian education at Saint Paul AME Church in Delray
Beach, FL. In 1976, he graduated from Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, FL.
Following high school, he joined the United States Air Force 1976 as a Security
Specialist. He was stationed in Coral Cables,Fl, McGuire AFB, NJ and London, England
until he separated in 1979 with a Honorable Discharge.
Ramses began his employment with the City of Spartanburg Police Department on April
21, 1980. He continued his professional career serving as a Police Officer and a
Firefighter. While working as a officer, he was assigned to the Patrol Division, the Task
Force, the Metro Narcotics Unit, and the Housing Complex Unit.
He retired from Law Enforcement with 25.6 years of service from the city on June 30,
2005.
After retirement, he worked at the Police Satellite Station on the campus of Spartanburg
Community College until January 2017.
He joined Spirit Lodge and served from 1982 to 1995. Afterwards, he co-founded The
King Solomon Lodge #112. Ramses’ Masonic journey also included becoming a
member of the Shriner Temple Paji, where he was the youngest Potentat in South
Carolina. He also is a patron with the Queen Esther #158 and the Charleston Queens
#893 Chapters of Spartanburg and Charleston, respectively. For 3 1/2 terms, he was
the Deputy Grand Master for B’ Natural #079. Another great accomplishment was that
he earned a 32nd degree in Masonry.
He is preceded in death by his brother Richard Carter Newman. He leaves to cherish
memories his wife, Tracy, his sister-in-law, Theresa, five other siblings: Donna K
Newman-FL, Paula Newman Rocker, FL, John C Newman, Sr (Danelia)-HI, Mary M
Newman-HI and Allen Porter Newman (Cynthia)-FL.
He was blessed to leave behind 4 children, Kelly McGinlay- UK, Amey Porter -UK,
Stephanie Sims, Nanhdi Newman-SC, 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and and a host of nieces ,nephews. cousins and friends
